The 9 Marriage Proposal Ideas to Avoid at All Costs!

By Nicolas, the proposal expert in Paris | August 1, 2026

After more than 3,500 marriage proposals organized in Paris since 2006 with ApoteoSurprise, we have made it our mission to share and showcase on our blog the most original ideas for creating a successful marriage proposal.

But this time, we’re presenting the worst ones.

Because yes, after more than 20 years of experience creating spectacular marriage proposals, we’ve seen it all!

The marriage proposal ideas we are presenting here involve genuine risks for most couples. While they may seem appealing on paper, reality can sometimes have some very surprising twists in store for you...

So, if you want to create your own marriage proposal, we’re going to show you what not to do — and, above all, explain why.

You’re going to be amazed!

1. The ring hidden in a champagne glass

Marriage proposal with a ring hidden in a champagne glass

It is almost unbelievable: when an engagement ring is hidden inside a champagne glass, one woman in five ends up swallowing the ring! This figure may sound amusing, but it actually comes from a very serious survey carried out in Belgium a few years ago.

At ApoteoSurprise, we have been organizing marriage proposals since 2006, and over the years we have regularly had the opportunity to speak with Parisian restaurant owners. To our great surprise, we discovered that this incredible statistic was indeed true!

A ring hidden inside a champagne glass is the perfect example of a bad idea disguised as a romantic gesture — a fake romantic moment that can quickly turn into a nightmare.

Why do so many men fall for this unusual idea? Because it is deeply rooted in popular culture. The scene has been shown countless times in romantic movies.

The problem is that reality is rarely as magical as the Hollywood fantasy: there is no perfect camera angle, no professional makeup, no carefully designed lighting, and no romantic soundtrack in the background.

And above all, the ring is usually slipped into the champagne glass at dessert time, when the previous drinks and the relaxed atmosphere have caused her to completely lower her guard. Not to mention that the ring quickly becomes covered in foam and literally disappears among the bubbles.

The end of the evening can turn into a complete disaster: a trip to the emergency room in the worst-case scenario, broken teeth, and a damaged ring. In any case, the scene can never be truly elegant. Nothing compares to getting down on one knee during a marriage proposal, with the engagement ring delicately presented in its box.

For the same obvious reasons, we also advise against another version of this bad idea: hiding the ring inside a dessert or a cake! Flour and cream simply do not mix well with gold, silver, and precious stones.

2. The ring hidden in a Kinder Surprise egg

Marriage proposal with a ring hidden inside a Kinder Surprise

You may find this hard to believe, but every year, thousands of men, especially younger ones, propose by hiding the engagement ring... inside a Kinder Surprise egg.

In this case, the chocolate egg is rarely offered in a restaurant. It is usually presented in a more intimate, family setting, during a simple meal at home or even on a picnic.

The idea may seem fun, but it also carries a huge risk: making the moment feel childish. You can probably imagine her initial reaction, which is almost always the same:

“Oh, that’s cute!”

Yes, it’s cute — but that’s all it is: cute. This is rarely how women imagine the grand arrival of their Prince Charming for their marriage proposal. Trust us, arriving on a white horse is far more effective!

Some young men, however, go to great lengths: they carefully separate the two halves of the chocolate egg and sometimes even create their own figurine with a 3D printer to accompany the ring. They then have to put the egg back together and carefully restore the aluminium wrapper...

When, throughout our articles, we encourage you to personalize your marriage proposal and show that you have taken the time to create something truly unique for her, this is obviously not the kind of personalization we mean!

3. The Flash Mob

Marriage proposal with a Flash Mob

With a Flash Mob, we are entering seriously risky territory — even while standing firmly on the ground.

And we know who started it all: Bruno Mars, with his song Marry You in 2010. Shortly after its release, an incredible Flash Mob was organized for a marriage proposal, and the video quickly went viral, reaching several million views on YouTube within just a few weeks. Yes, but there was one small detail: we discovered a few years later that this marriage proposal was actually staged as part of a marketing campaign!

Regardless, the song quickly became the ultimate soundtrack for Flash Mob marriage proposals, creating a genuine phenomenon combining singing, dancing, and emotion. As for the emotion itself, however, not quite as much as you might expect — and we are going to explain why.

A successful Flash Mob requires the involvement of several dozen PROFESSIONAL dancers. And professionalism means weeks of rehearsals, especially at the exact location where the marriage proposal will take place. The setting is often a public place, because the whole idea behind a Flash Mob is to surprise the woman while she is going about her day, shopping in a supermarket, or taking a walk in a park.

But professionalism comes at a price: tens of thousands of euros.

In 2025, the talented French pianist Julien Cohen organized an absolutely spectacular Flash Mob in Paris set to the soundtrack of Bohemian Rhapsody. If watching the video does not bring a tear to your eye, then either you have a heart of stone or you are simply having a bad day. The success of this Flash Mob is undeniable — but that level of perfection comes at a cost: nearly €50,000.

An amateur dance group or an association may promise you the world, but we can assure you of one thing: the result could be an absolute disaster. Not only has the Flash Mob marriage proposal trend become outdated, but it can also make the woman you love feel extremely uncomfortable.

The purpose of a Flash Mob is to surprise someone when they least expect it. But a surprise marriage proposal is not just a spectacular moment: it is a carefully crafted experience that must be designed as a whole, rather than a single explosive moment that may ultimately feel too overwhelming.

Because yes, a Flash Mob can be overwhelming.

Just when someone feels completely comfortable, a crowd of strangers suddenly appears from every direction and invades their personal space. Whether it happens in a park or a supermarket, it is, at best, an awkward situation.

And when all eyes suddenly turn toward a woman who is completely unprepared for such attention, she may even experience the moment as an intrusion. She may say “yes” in the heat of the moment, but what she will remember most afterwards is the shock rather than the gentle emotion of a heartfelt declaration of love.

4. Karaoke

Marriage proposal with karaoke

Let’s be honest: just like bowling, karaoke is much more an activity you enjoy with friends than something you share as a couple. Would you propose during a bowling game? No? Then why would you propose during a karaoke night?

At karaoke venues, you often find groups of friends who are there to have fun, enjoy themselves, laugh — and sometimes even tease one another, albeit in a friendly way.

So do you really think that a moment as important as a marriage proposal should be exposed to laughter or awkward reactions? You simply cannot predict or control how other people will respond.

When people are with friends, there is a particular dynamic: they belong to their own group, and their attention naturally remains focused on conversations within that group rather than on events happening around them (such as a birthday celebration during the evening).

As a result, during karaoke, the emotions of a marriage proposal will not spread in the same way as they would in a more intimate and meaningful setting. The emotional impact of a “yes” may simply fall flat.

Some men believe that proposing during a song that is meaningful to their relationship — whether it is a love song or not — will create an unforgettable moment.

But a song that is deeply meaningful to one couple may mean absolutely nothing to the other people in the room. The overall reaction may therefore fall far short of what was expected, especially once alcohol has already begun to change the atmosphere of the evening.

There is another important point: for a marriage proposal during a karaoke night to work, you either need to be a genuinely talented singer who is comfortable performing on stage, or you need to have rehearsed with a vocal coach for weeks.

A marriage proposal is already a stressful moment, and it takes real confidence to sing well while also opening your heart in front of the woman you love and a room full of complete strangers.

Let’s be clear: things can quickly become awkward — or even embarrassing...

And the moment can end up being more uncomfortable than magical for everyone involved, especially the woman you were supposed to amaze.

5. The Concert

Marriage proposal during a concert

Over the past 20 years, many men have contacted ApoteoSurprise to help them stage their marriage proposal during a concert by their favourite singer. But even when their idea was technically possible, we have always refused. Why? Because the moment can be extremely difficult for both people involved.

Let’s clear up a common misconception: concert organizers and singers, even the biggest stars, are usually quite willing to allow a marriage proposal to take place during their show. They find it “cool”, joyful, and positive — and, let’s be honest, it is also highly beneficial for their image. They know perfectly well that the moment, filmed by hundreds of smartphones, will be shared across social media. In other words, they get a viral moment and valuable publicity at almost no cost!

But for the man making the marriage proposal, an unexpected challenge awaits: stepping into the spotlight and standing beside the star.

Because yes, you will have to walk onto the stage and stand next to the person your partner adores or even idolizes. And you will have to face an impossible comparison: charisma, fame, and stage presence.

Imagine that your partner is a huge fan of Justin Bieber or Ed Sheeran. The singer invites you onto the stage. Hundreds or even thousands of spectators cheer. Suddenly, you find yourself standing there under the lights, facing a sea of people, with powerful spotlights making it impossible to see the audience clearly, and a speech to deliver without stumbling — all in a level of noise and excitement you have never experienced before.

You completely lose all sense of your surroundings.

Because yes, being on stage is another world! It is like swimming among sharks.

And now, let’s talk about the biggest trap of all.

Even if you manage to become a superhero during your marriage proposal, your partner will then have to come onto the stage herself. And she will suddenly find herself face to face with her idol.

The star will look her in the eyes and say a few words to her: an emotional shock.

We can guarantee you one thing: all her thoughts, all her emotions, and all her attention will be focused on the singer!

She will probably say “yes”, if only instinctively and to avoid creating an awkward situation in front of everyone. But the overwhelming memory she will take away from the evening will most likely be this:

“Can you believe it? He spoke to me, he gave me a special moment during his concert, I was on stage with him!”

And yes, you may end up feeling forgotten, even though you were supposed to be Prince Charming...

6. The Helicopter Flight

Marriage proposal during a helicopter flight

If you want to add some altitude to your marriage proposal, what is the first idea that comes to mind? A helicopter, of course.

Admit it: flying over the Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls, Manhattan, Dubai, or Paris may seem like an incredibly original way to surprise the woman you love. Especially if you are planning champagne, flowers, and chocolates when you land. Not to mention a romantic evening with a fine-dining restaurant and a luxury hotel that will leave her starry-eyed.

Imagine the dreamlike landscapes, the unforgettable photos, the world unfolding beneath your feet as your hand gently holds hers.

Stop. Let’s stop right there. There is a major problem.

A helicopter ride for a marriage proposal? Really?

If your partner has never flown in a helicopter before, you are going to ask her to marry you while she is discovering an entirely new experience — and perhaps even feeling extremely anxious?

Well, you may be in for a few surprises...

Problem No. 1: Weather-related cancellations

The risk of your flight being cancelled because of the weather is very high. Your entire plan could collapse just minutes before take-off. You had better have a backup plan, because the disappointment could be enormous.

Problem No. 2: The scenery may steal the spotlight

An endless horizon, a breathtaking 360-degree panorama... and your marriage proposal may end up being almost invisible in the middle of such a spectacular landscape.

A helicopter is not an intimate setting.

Problem No. 3: The noise

You will both be wearing headsets, which means you will be deprived of one of the most important senses during a marriage proposal: hearing.

Yet the voice is one of the most sensual and powerful tools when expressing love.

Problem No. 4: Motion sickness

Sweating, dizziness, nausea...

It is completely unpredictable and impossible to control.

Helicopter companies unfortunately know this situation all too well: some passengers struggle with the sensations of flying, sometimes with consequences that are difficult to anticipate.

✧ Don’t miss this: give her a hot-air balloon marriage proposal above the Parisian landscapes, surrounded by a magical and peaceful atmosphere.

7. Skydiving

Marriage proposal during a skydiving jump

Around the world, many skydiving companies and clubs offer their customers the opportunity to make a marriage proposal during a tandem jump.

The idea is simple: a banner reading “Clara, will you marry me?” is placed at the planned landing spot.

Of course, this assumes that the instructor will be able to land exactly where the banner has been placed.

But here is the problem: during a skydive, especially if it is your first time, the adrenaline rush is extraordinary. Your brain has already experienced an intense emotional shock: fear, excitement, pushing your limits, pleasure, euphoria. The emotional peak has already happened. By the time you make your marriage proposal, it becomes almost impossible to create another wave of emotion of equal intensity. And yes, during a skydive, the marriage proposal often falls completely flat. It becomes an ordinary moment, stripped of the magic you were hoping for. What a waste!

The scene usually goes like this: the man lands first, followed shortly afterwards by the woman. He proposes. She says “yes”. But what is she really thinking?

She is thinking that the experience was incredible, that she was terrified, but that it was one of the most amazing things she has ever done, that the thrill was unforgettable, and that she has only one thing on her mind: doing it again.

And what about the size of the banner? Because yes, a five-metre banner is large (and expensive). Except that from an altitude of 100 metres, it looks tiny. Even at 50 metres. And you still have to notice it while you are overwhelmed by the sensations and flying through a three-dimensional landscape. Thankfully, the instructor is there at the very last moment to point towards the message...

8. Sporting events

Marriage proposal during a sporting event

On social media, videos of marriage proposals during sporting events can be found by the thousands: American football, basketball, baseball, rugby, soccer, ice hockey, cycling, marathons, Formula 1...

Men often do it because it is something they personally enjoy. Most of the time, their partner is there with them, but they are the ones caught up in the excitement and adrenaline of the competition. They are in their element, having an amazing time, and they think there is nothing better than combining their passion for sport with their passion for love. And yes, why not enjoy a double dose of excitement?

And if they can also have a few thousand witnesses for their marriage proposal, why not go for it?

Except that... things rarely turn out the way they imagined.

It is no coincidence that many viral “proposal gone wrong” videos take place during sporting events. Sweat and romance do not always make the perfect combination!

As we have already pointed out, in most cases, women accompany their partner simply “to make him happy”. And let’s be honest: it is not always the most magical moment of their lives. The shouting of supporters, clashes on the field, high-pressure situations, tension in the stands: the excitement of a sporting competition is not exactly the most romantic atmosphere.

So when a marriage proposal suddenly appears in the middle of a sporting event, completely out of nowhere, the reactions of the surprised crowd can sometimes be quite astonishing.

But the first person concerned is, above all, the woman receiving the proposal. The moment she dreamed would be wonderful suddenly arrives in a wave of shouting, noise and countless eyes staring at her. The situation can become extremely uncomfortable, which explains the many marriage proposal videos where you can see the woman running away while the man experiences, in front of everyone, the most awkward moment of his life.

The situation is just as delicate when the man making the marriage proposal is one of the competitors. Adrenaline, dopamine and endorphins have already flooded his body, and without even realizing it, the athlete is sabotaging the incredible emotions he could have experienced in a completely different setting.

One final observation: on that day, the real event is not the marriage proposal. It is the sporting competition!

9. Floral decorations on the Seine riverbanks in Paris

Marriage proposal with a floral decoration on the banks of the Seine in Paris

Ah, the floral decorations on the Seine riverbanks! Everyone around the world has seen these stunning photos and videos on social media. A postcard-perfect setting, with couples looking like models posing for Vanity Fair.

These decorations first appeared in Paris in 2023, and since then they have spread to several hundred cities around the world. For the organizers, who may be wedding planners, florists, or even private individuals, the concept is simple: they order a large artificial flower heart with a stand from a Chinese website, a few artificial rose bouquets, a red carpet, LED candles, and two small spotlights. They then load everything into their car before setting up wherever they can along the riverbanks. The reality is that everyone uses the same supplier, and almost all the decorations look virtually identical.

Of course, these installations are completely illegal. These makeshift displays are hastily set up wherever the Eiffel Tower can provide a beautiful backdrop when it sparkles (which is their sole objective), mainly at Port Debilly or on Bir-Hakeim Bridge. These setups have almost replaced the street vendors who used to sell miniature Eiffel Towers. Faced with the growing chaos, Paris City Hall introduced regulations at the beginning of 2026 requiring organizers to obtain authorization for each installation, with a €300 fee if their application is approved. Needless to say, nobody applies for authorization or pays the €300 fee. So the police occasionally step in.

The real issue is what couples actually experience. Contrary to what the images on social media suggest, they are far from being alone in a romantic bubble. It is common to see 10, 15, or even 20 setups lined up side by side. When the couple arrives, they have to ask the decorators which one belongs to them. And sometimes they even have to wait if the previous marriage proposal is not over yet. Because yes, when you order this type of marriage proposal online, despite what is implied, it is not created exclusively for you! Very often, the same setup is reused for several marriage proposals taking place one after another. The goal is simply to make as much money as possible.

As for the surprise effect, forget about it. As you walk past the different setups, your partner will immediately understand what is about to happen. And the experience is far from idyllic, because even if your decoration is ready and the candles are lit, you will probably see neighboring teams busy on the ground: packing away their equipment, unloading their cars, inflating balloons, testing sound systems, or even arguing because they believe they arrived first and “deserve” the spot. And of course, these decorations have become a tourist attraction, meaning you will inevitably cross paths with dozens of tourists casually taking photos.

We have even witnessed scenes of sadness and disappointment that stayed with us: young women leaving the area in tears after the short ceremony because their decoration looked tiny and underwhelming compared with the one next door. Because yes, when several marriage proposals take place at the same time in a limited area, it is impossible not to compare your own experience with what other couples are living just a few metres away. It is simply human nature.

We could also mention the weather, because when the wind picks up or rain starts falling, the moment can quickly become difficult.

The good news is that, in the overwhelming majority of cases, the woman already knows what is going to happen (she usually dresses accordingly). So it is not truly a surprise: she knows she is about to receive a marriage proposal, and she knows that what she is going to experience above all is a small engagement ceremony in a rather artificial, theatrical setting. She knows perfectly well that the main purpose is to pose for a photographer. It is worth mentioning that, for profitability reasons, the photographer is often one of the people who installed the decoration.

But even if, once you are there, you realize that the small setup looks rather modest compared with the spectacular Parisian backdrop you had imagined, the primary goal remains to obtain photos and videos that will make family and friends dream. In most cases, couples experience this marriage proposal for the images they will take away from it. And the good news is that these small flower-and-candle decorations do create an illusion: they almost always produce visuals that are just as beautiful as the ones people expect.

That is the whole paradox: the photos will make everyone who sees them dream. But they will never tell the true story of what the couple actually lived through.

We hope this article hasn’t made you want to go skydiving — at least not for a marriage proposal. And don’t plan on proposing to your partner in the middle of a concert with a Kinder Surprise, hoping the audience will spontaneously create a Flash Mob for you.

There are so many incredible ideas to offer your beloved a true fairy tale: a moment of pure magic, frozen in time, that will stay with her forever!

Paris is the dream city to propose to your princess, so give her the dream she deserves: she will give you a hundred times more in return.
